long week @ 9:00 am
The past 3 days have been tiring, I felt like I was working a 9 to 5 job. It must be worse for Nat and Mark, they looked tired and stressed the whole 3- day non-residential camp. Tha's cos they're interns at Straits Times( Here on will be said as ST).

media camp day 1, 22 November

met all the other IN crowders, Asyikin, Joanna, Krystal, Mark, Rajesh, Mervyn, Natalie, Pamela, Sarah-Ann, Nicolette and Tripta. They are all fun people, very fun. On the first day, we got 3 t-shirts- 2 white (ST media club) and 1 black (IM IN). I had wore the white one over my t-shirt. I also met the 2 other media clubbers from my school- Clara and An An, and Mrs Francis.

First we played icebreaker games- the Human Bingo. I got to know other students from other schools like TKGS, TKSS, BNSS, ACS(BR) and etc... Shucks, I never win at this kind of things. Then a talk by Mr Peter Khoo, Vice President and Head, Editorial Projects and Branding,
English & Malay Newspapers Division regarding the newspaper industry.

I loved the lunches that they gave us. It was SUPERB! And I found a solat room in the Berita Harian Department. Not exactly found, Shahrena showed me the way. She is one of the people in charge of/ working with/ guiding us. BTW, all of them are Mr Peter Khoo, Paul, Shahrena, Yenling, Elsie and Danial. The editor of IN is Serene and Bertha Henson (more on that l8r).

After that we had a talk by Ms Bertha Henson about what it takes to be a good reporter. She's the supervising editor of Home news at the ST. Her talk was most enjoyable. She kept cracking us up, making the auditorium filled with laughter.

After a round of icebreakers, Ms Serene Goh, IN editor came in and told us how IN is put together and what we can do to contribute to IN and the ST. I felt quite paiseh because she kept saying "These people in front of you have been putting IN together for the past year." or something to the likes of that and I certainly have not been doing that because i JUST joined.

Following teabreak (yummy cakes and fingerfoods) Mr Robin Ganguly (nice name right, just repeat it, Ganguly), who is a sub-editor told us what his work is. Sub-editors give headlines to articles, cut stories down to size and basically layouts everything. They work late in the night. That's what I found out about other journalists too- they work LATE into the night (think 1 AM). After feedback, I went home with Krystal and Sam.

media club camp day 2, 23 November

On the second day, I had to come super earlier because we were going to the Print Center where all the newspapers were being printed. I was in group one with all schools from Ang Mo Kio Sec to Methodist Girls' Schools. The place was super NOISYYY. I couldn't hear the person talking and telling us what this and that was. But the plating part was cool. That's all i liked about that place.

When we came back, there was tea break followed by a session on Photojournalism by Mr Ong Kin Chai. He gave us some tips on how to take good pictures, putting emotion in, not just focusing on the main things and not always following the rules. There were pictures on the tsunami and earthquakes victims. Those were some really good stuff that he showed us. There was even one where ministers were looking at their medallions like little kids. That was funny.

After lunch and icebreakers, Ms Ong Sor Fern came and gave us all the juicy gossips about celebrities and her experience interviewing them. We had a good time laughing and what-nots. She even interviewed Danial Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Chris Columbus, Dakota Fanning and etc...AAgH. But she added that even though there were the plus sides of being a film correspondent of ST, Life! (i.e.celebs, posh hotels, all expenses paid flying and travelling atound the world esp, London , New York) there are the down sides of it (i.e. putting up with celebs' attitudes, waiting one whole day w/o any food for press conferences, waking up at 6 am to watch a preview of a movie [ journalists are not early morning people]) . So in order to tahan all this, one must be extremely thick skin, resourceful and kaypoh! ahahahah

Then Hossan Leong came in and we asked him questions. He was so funny lah. And there were queues of people wanting to ask him stuff. Paul had to limit one question per person.

Then, Hossan left and Mr Khoo came in and introduced the ChildAid concert where talented youths will perform for needy youths to the auditorium and Joanna talked wbout what it felt like the past year she was in IN. Then she introduced all of us and forgot what school Asyikin came from. :]] Her voice was like so shaky.

media club camp day 3, 24 November

Whee! The 3rd day wasn't so bad. I didn't have to come so ealy. Just imagine! Singapore Press Holdings is where the camp is held and it's at Braddell.

First, Shahrena took us on a tour of the News Room where the journalists' work but since it is early in the moning, there aren't a lot of them. We spotted Robin Ganguly and Bertha Henson. In the Life! part of the Newsroom, there were so many movie posters. It was definitely different from the more serious parts of the ST paper.

After that we had teabreak and icebreakers and a session by Ms Tanya Fong & Mr Ben Nadarajan on The thrills & spills of being a crime reporter. They talked about the Anthony Ler case, the Huang Na case and it was just gruesome to hear their facts.

Listening to their tips was good as it could definitely improve my english composition. Speaking about compos, we were asked to write a 100 word newspaper article after having a mock-up interview session with volunteers from RJC. It was a pretend thing- the RJCians were supposed to be the poeple involved in the case of the chopped up maid whose body parts were found near Orchard MRT and MacRitchie Reservoir seperately. My group was me, Rajesh, Mervyn, Nicolette, Sam and Asyikin. We were asked to come up w/ a layout of the article, a picture and two maps showing the location of the found body parts.

Our group won the best headline. We had help fro Ben so whaddya expect? haha
The group who won overall got a $50 Kinokuniya voucher. Haizzz...

After that both journalists talked about their experiences covering the natural disaster and the countries inflicted with earthquakes and tsunamis. Terrorism was not that widely covered.

Then we got our certificates for attending the camp and then....Home Sweet Home!

oh btw, I bought a new pair of shoes.

Welcoming Tea, IN crowd, 25 November

In the morning, I went jalaning raya w/ 2/O , 2/M and 2/C ppl. This includes, me, Jannah, Atiqah, Husna, Dian, Hazwani, Fadilah, Sadelena and Yarasyima. We had to wait a looong time for Sade who had to wait for Yara. THat I was pissed at cos I had to leave at 1.45pm for the Tea which starts at 3. We went to my house, Maisarah's house and Yuslyana's house and that was it. I brought a change of clothes and went to SPH. I was late with Krystal. We were on the SAME train. But as we went in, Bertha and Serene was just behind us so Paul said "well...you're not technically late. Then we ate biscuits and drank tea and we looked at previous issues of IN and discussed what should be changed, why, what should be out, why. Then, the first anniversary of IN was discussed too. I can't wait. It should be fun...and posh. haha

Asyikin's parents drove me all the way to Masjid Darul Aman because I wanted to solat Asar. I was surprised lah...like ALL the way.? Then I went to Tok's house, waited for Mak and went to her friend's house. Long day? I know.

Did You Know? @ 8:50 pm
If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of a atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Do not try this at home... maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's headoff. ("Honey, I'm home. What the....?!")

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.
(30 minutes... lucky pig... can you imagine??)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (OK, so that would be a good thing....)

A cat's urine glows under a black light. (I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed. (If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.)

[Ari Lasso - Cinta Sejati] @ 8:47 pm
Aku jatuh cinta padamu
Sejak pertama kita bertemu
Diam menghuni relung hati
Kau tak pernah perduli

Tuhan mengapa Kau anugerahkan
Cinta yang tak mungkin tuk bersatu
Kau yang tlah lama kucintai
Ada yang memiliki

Cinta sejati
Tak akan pernah mati
Slalu menghiasi
Ketulusan cinta ini

Jaman hidup tlah membuat kita
Harus senantiasa bersama
Lewati sgala suka duka
Tiada cinta bicara

Cinta sejati
Tak akan pernah mati
Slalu menghiasi
Ketulusan cinta ini

Dan kau selalu
Hanya diam membisu
Meski kau tahu
Betapa dalam cintaku

i like this song-it's nice. but i can't find it.

why I took physics instead of biology even though i don't get maths @ 8:43 pm
December 18, 2003
Take physics, chemistry and biology if you want a big salary new report says
Institute of Physics News Release PR82(03) 15th December 2003

Physics combined with other science A levels comes out top in a new report which analyses the future earnings of students who take various A level combinations. This research comes immediately before the expected interim report of the 14-19 Working Party chaired by Mike Tomlinson.

The report, by Professor Geraint Johnes from the University of Lancaster Managament School, found that the highest salaries are enjoyed by those who took physics, chemistry and biology together at A level. The lowest rate of return comes from studying English, History and French.

Dr Julia King, Chief Executive of the Institute of Physics said today:
"Students who think physics is nerdy could find that they'll pay for it in later life! Not only is physics rigorous analytical training but it also teaches approaches to solving problems in a genuinely creative way. This makes these students more desirable in industry and business. The message is clear: if you want to get ahead, get physics."

We hope that this report will be widely read by careers advisors as it shows the importance of making the right subject choices and combinations at 16.

A recent survey of members of the Instute of Physics showed that the highest paid sectors are finance, telecommunications and the electrical industry. About one third of all physicists work in public service industries; one third in private industry and one third in secondary and higher education. Some physicists work on problems at the frontiers of knowledge; others tackle the challenges which arise in the application of physical concepts to industrial, engineering and business products and processes.

Information on careers using physics and on physics A level courses can be found on the Institute of Physics website.

Eight Reasons Why No Student Should Go
Through High School Without Taking Physics

The significant advantages of taking high school physics is one of the best kept secrets in American education. For most students physics is challenging. Many lack the confidence to attempt it unless encouraged to do so and all too often that does not happen. Part of the reason is the fact that relatively few high school science teachers, let alone counselors and administrators, have had significant training in physics or are fully aware of its significance to career possibilities. Individuals who are well qualified to teach physics are often attracted away from teaching by the significantly higher paychecks available in industry. Those students fortunate enough to attend a high school with a strong physics program should make every effort to take advantage of it for the following reasons:

1. Most modern technology came from physics. Any technology involving electricity, magnetism, mechanics, heat, light, sound, optics, etc. comes from physics. Even though the basic knowledge required to discover fertilizers, drugs, plastics, and chemicals comes from chemistry and in some cases biology, all of these items have to be manufactured, and manufacturing is dominated by physics-based technology.

2. Most branches of sciences contain principles obtained from physics. Like technology, it is hard to find a branch of science which does not contain some physics-related aspect such as electricity, magnetism, mechanics, heat, light, sound, optics, etc. Chemistry in particular becomes indistinguishable from physics when delving into the atomic model. Physics has been called the most basic science and in many cases it is required in order to understand concepts in other sciences.

3. Physics classes can help polish the skills needed to score well on the SAT. Physics classes provide practice in both algebra and geometry. These are the types of mathematics which are most likely to occur on the SAT. However, physics is not a math class. To understand the concepts of physics students have to use analogies. To work physics problems, students must be able to read and comprehend short paragraphs packed with information. Physics develops both math and verbal skills.

4. College recruiters recognize the value of physics classes. College recruiters tend to be favorably impressed by transcripts containing challenging classes like physics. They know it is relatively easy to attain a high GPA by taking a light course load. Success in high school physics is considered a sign of academic maturity and ability. Some technically oriented college programs will deny entrance to students who have not taken high school physics.

5. College success for virtually all science, computer, engineering, and premedical majors depends on passing physics. College level physics is a required course for all of these majors. Engineering is almost entirely applied physics. Pre-medicine majors are typically required to take the same number of physics as biology classes! Also, about 25% of the science knowledge required for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is based on physics. College physics courses for freshman often have 200 or more students in them and can be impersonal. They move at a fast pace and have a high failure rate. Some colleges will not allow a student to take college level physics unless they have had high school physics. Studies (ref 2,4) indicate that a high quality high school physics course helps significantly reduce the failure rate in college-level physics. These studies suggest that students with a high school physics course score on average about one letter grade higher in college physics than students with no high school physics background. Students themselves typically indicate that high school physics is a significant factor in their ability to handle college-level physics material.

6. Physics classes hone thinking skills. Physics is about the only high school-level class which requires both mathematical and verbal skills. All problems in physics are word problems which require students to think logically, use analogies, and deal with subtle shades of meaning. Passing scores in AP (Advanced Placement) calculus correlate with high PSAT math scores. Passing scores in AP literature courses correlate with high PSAT verbal scores. AP physics is the only AP course where passing scores correlate with both high verbal and high math PSAT scores. Physics courses teach students to think and this is a valuable skill apart from the knowledge content of physics. For instance the law school entrance exam LSAT requires no particular content knowledge, however, about 67% of an applicant's score depends on answering logical reasoning and logic game questions.

7. The job market for people with skills in physics is strong. Engineers are applied physicists and comprise the second largest profession in America (second only to teaching) with about 1.4 million members. By comparison, there are about 500 thousand medical doctors and only around 100 thousand biologists. However, even medical doctors and most biologists have to take college-level physics courses. Knowledge of physics is a prerequisite for many forms of employment.

8. A knowledge of physics is needed to understand music, art, and literature. Physics is the science which deals with sound. It is impossible to understand how instruments work or to build a theory of music without resorting to physics. Einstein, for instance, was an accomplished violinist. Physics is also the science of light. What could be more basic to an understanding of art? Leonardo da Vinci was not only a great artist but also an outstanding physicist. He was one of the first physicists to develop a wave theory of light. Clearly physicists have been influenced by literary figures. The physics term quark was taken from James Joyce and the term boojaums from Lewis Carroll (ref 12). By the same token, many commonly used expressions in our everyday language come from physics. These include quantum leap, free fall, light years, black holes, resonance, and being on the same wave length. Many authors have used allusions to physics in their literary works. William Faulkner, for instance, used the symbolism of time dilation in The Sound and the Fury. John Updike and a host of other poets have used physics metaphors in their work. The arts and humanities cannot be fully understood without some background in physics.

I just think this is a nice poem. Has no relevance to me though.

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.

So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.

You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.

I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
Goodbye.

the burnt smell. @ 8:22 pm
I just want to treasure this fresh memory that I have. It was last Saturday/Sunday. I was at Ayah Wam's open house and me and my cousins, Sabrina, Farah and Nadiah were eating at the verandah. And Farah and Nadiah were going in and out saying Assalammualaikum continuously and salaming me and Sabrina like makcik lembutss.. It got irritating after a while. My father was the one who taught them. Haha....Then going home time, Najihah forced me to go with her to Ayah Cik and Cik Tina's house. I had gone already but Cik Azah, Najihah's mother promised to treat us to Mac Ds.

So in the end, the people following were me, my brother, Sabrina, Imran, Nadiah and Farah. So Ayah War changed his car with Ayah Chor cos his car was too small to fit all of us. But Ayah War wasn't familiar with Ayah Chor's car, it was a MPV. And Ayah War kept asking Imran where the hand brake was ((it was at the foot area. Then why call it HAND brake??)) And suddenly, all of us in the car smelt something burning. Then all of us evacuated the car. And we saw smoke rising from the left rear tire. At that while, the car was parked at an row of terraces. And suddenly dogs were barking and having converstaions among themselves. I thought the tire was burnt because of thefriction. Turns out, the brake pedals had too much friction rubbing against each other. Haha.. It was such a scene. But we managed to reach Ayah Cik and Cik Tina's safely. Alhamdulillah...

a pain in the back @ 7:59 pm
i woke up today with this very intimidating pain around my shoulder blades. so i called geraldine at about 6.45 am n told her im not coming for training...the hurt was so bad that suddenly while i was walking to the toilet, my back doubled up in pain..so i was in double pain..that plus my monthly cramps..ahhh. it hurtsssss.

the first thought that came in my mind was the probablity of having cancer. I know..((masyaALLAH n touch wood)) It was all because I saw this advertisement and this boy had cancer and they showed him doubling over in pain and touching his back. I think about cancer a lot...breast cancer and the likes...I want to know what causes cancer...Cik Tina, can help me? haha. I think radiation is one of the causes...or something to the likes of that. So I would always put my handphone as far away from me as possible always. And my teacher once said that using deodorant could cause breast cancer because all the sweat is blocked from going out freely as they should. Then the sweat forms into one big lump. I'm sorry charlene if you don;t understand what i have blabbered on so far.

So while my teammates were hard at work trainig and then playing a game against rival schools, I was watching television at home and lazying around. Then I 2 out of 4 vcds i borrowed from Shahini. ((I was there recently cos she had an open house. And after that went tampines mall with Sade, Shahini and Fade. And Sade was playing with her camera and some make up. And we saw Husna and Maisarah outside Precious Thoughts, where I bought a new address book cos I lost the old one and I asked everybody for their addresses. Anyway Husna and Maisarah were fresh out of the cinema from watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Scary story. I dont watch scary stories...what for scare yourself..? I wouldnt be able to sleep at night. Husna was wearing the tudung but Maisarah wasn't but she usually does... what's up with that? K why should I care? Her pasal lah..)) So I watched Duplex and 13 going on to 30...both VERY FUNNY stories.....I laughed out loud a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Then my cousin, Najihah called to invite me to watch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire but it was later cancelled cos' the tickets were out of sale. To think that there ARE people right now who has watched HPGoF. Haiz...nevermind then, another day.

And my brother had a record number of people calling in for him today. Which was VERY irritating actually...

Kay, tomorrow I have to go the dentist's/// wow. And I still haven't decided when to go out for Hari Raya with my primary school friends, my secondary school friends and my netball friends. Seriously I prefer Ramadhan than Syawal. Syawal is too much of a hassle...aaahhhh.

scoop. i love me @ 1:48 pm
So you noticed I've been gone for a long time...
I just can't bring myself to type... partly because my left little finger has been sprained doing the same netball drill.
So i will make it short and sweet.

I went out to eat this marvelllous baked rice at pizza hut with charlene, yasmin and geraldine. When geraldine's order came I touched the hot plane for fun and exclaimed, "Ooh! this is hot!" and what did dear geraldine do? She said," Nevermind, I'll help you" and she went and burnt her hands...and I was going," GC! That was a stupid thing that you did! hahaha!" All the table broke out in laughter...I think we were the noisiest table there. The service there, according to Charlene, was better than the last time she came. I agreed with her, on the part of the service I mean, that I regretted not giving them tips..haha.. (There was a little tip box on the counter when me and Yasmin paid the manager/cashier[ who smiled at Yasmin]) haha.

Then I went to the library and found out that you could borrow 8 books from now until Jan 2006. WOW! So I borrowed 4 more books...
My 2 days consecutive at compass point.

Then on Monday, I went to NAtional Dental Centre and my teeth had their minutes of fame. My teeth were put in a special type of plasticine, to make a model out of them, in wax, x-rayed, and taken photos of. All because I was going to put on braces. But before that I had to extract 4 teeth! 4 good healthy perfectly functional teeth! My mother has doubts about that. So if there is any other way to put on braces AND still keep my four teeth, she would do it. For me of course. And Charlene, who had her braces put on at the NDC, says that their service is bad...and that doing your braces at private dentists, even though it would cost more, would be of much better service. But I'm not exactly made of money...

So next year I would be taking English, Higher Malay, Elementary Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Social Studies combined with Geography as 1 subject or SS/Geog and Pure History. I have already bought the books I am proud to say AND English, Vocabulary and Mathematics assesment books. Now all I need to do is my homework, make a scheme on how to improve my languages and maths and science....And my voulunteer schedule. I have got myself in Photography under Media Club with Shahini as the vice chairperson to accompany me... Whee Can't wait..

And I suddenly find some people totally wants to be taken. Embrace reality! Get in the flow! wannabe beeeee.
