If you can feel sorrow and grief without surrendering to despair
And be kind even to those who seem unworthy of your care,

If you can let go of grudges being the very first to forgive
And be afraid of being hurt yet fearless the way you live,

If you can see others succeed without feeling envy or disdain
And drink the heady wine of praise and not become too vain,

If you can weep at the joy or sadness of those you do not know
And draw comfort from the love around you in your time of deepest woe,

If you can fill your heart with gratitude when others curse their fate
And struggle through impatience when you know you have to wait,

If you can find something that makes you smile on a dark and gloomy day
And, however lost you feel, persist until you find your way,

If you can want something so badly it feels like a need
And pursue what gives you pleasure and not fall prey to greed,

If you can do a lot of what you want but everything you must
And be faithful to your friends and worthy of a stranger’s trust,

If you can bear criticism without bitterness and from it find a gain
And be honest even when you know the truth will cause you pain,

If you can do what’s right regardless of the cost
And find a strengthening lesson in the most disappointing loss,

If you can dance with temptation and neither stumble or fall
And listen to your conscience, putting honor above all,

If you can do all this, my friend, you’ll bask in wisdom’s light
And happiness will find its way to make your future bright.
